What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete's foot, a common fungal infection, thrives in warm, moist environments like locker rooms and swimming pools. Symptoms include itching, burning, and cracked, peeling skin between toes. To prevent it, keep your feet clean and dry, wear breathable footwear, and avoid walking barefoot in public areas. Treatment options range from over-the-counter antifungal creams and powders to prescription medications for persistent infections. Maintaining good foot hygiene, such as washing feet daily and drying them thoroughly, is important. If symptoms persist or worsen despite self-care measures, a podiatrist can confirm the diagnosis, recommend appropriate medications, and provide tips to prevent recurrence. Prompt treatment not only alleviates discomfort but also prevents the spread of the infection to other parts of the body or to others. If you suffer from athlete’s foot, it is suggested you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a treatment plan.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.

Prevention

The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:

  • Thoroughly washing and drying feet
  • Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
  • Using shower shoes in public showers
  • Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
  • Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot

Symptoms

Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Scaly and peeling skin

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.

Reasons to See a Podiatrist

Visiting a podiatrist can significantly enhance your foot health and overall mobility. Podiatrists specialize in diagnosing, treating, preventing, and rehabilitating lower limb issues. This can include general foot conditions like bunions, calluses, and fungal infections, as well as more complex problems associated with diabetes and arthritis. If you have persistent foot pain, a podiatrist can provide effective relief through treatment and exercises tailored to your specific needs. Athletes, dancers, and runners benefit from a podiatrist’s expertise in managing sports injuries, such as sprains and fractures. Custom orthotics are another vital service provided by podiatrists. These specially designed shoe inserts can correct biomechanical issues, alleviate pain, and enhance walking or running performance. Podiatrists also offer essential footwear advice, helping individuals select the right shoes to support and improve their gait. Additionally, they perform minor surgeries for skin and nail concerns, such as ingrown nails and warts. By addressing foot problems early, podiatrists help prevent further complications, enhancing your quality of life and mobility. If you are suffering from foot, toe, or ankle pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam, diagnosis, and treatment options.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.

Common Causes of Ankle Pain

Ankle pain can arise from various conditions affecting the bones, ligaments, tendons, or muscles in the ankle joint. This complex joint, where the foot and leg meet, consists of three joints that facilitate both up-and-down and side-to-side movements. Ankle pain can stem from overuse injuries such as Achilles tendinitis or ruptures, which cause significant pain and limit mobility. Conditions like arthritis, gout, and bursitis also can lead to chronic pain, stiffness, and swelling in the ankle. Structural issues, such as bone spurs or fractures, often resulting from trauma or overuse, may cause acute or lingering discomfort. Swollen ankles, the result of fluid buildup, can occur from prolonged standing, pregnancy, or underlying medical conditions. Wearing ill-fitting shoes and tarsal tunnel syndrome, where nerve compression leads to pain and tingling, also contribute to ankle pain. Symptoms can include throbbing, redness, numbness, and weakness. Through a series of tests, a podiatrist can accurately determine the underlying cause. If you have ankle pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with James Pak, DPM from California. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Possible Causes of Foot Pain

Foot pain is a common issue that can arise from various causes, impacting daily activities and overall quality of life. The most common causes include plantar fasciitis, which involves inflammation of the tissue running along the bottom of the foot, and arthritis, which affects the joints. Other frequent sources of foot pain are bunions, caused by misalignment of the big toe joint, and hammertoes, where toes bend abnormally. Injuries such as fractures, sprains, and strains also contribute to foot pain, often resulting from accidents or overuse. Additionally, deformities like flat feet or high arches can lead to discomfort by altering the natural distribution of weight across the foot. Conditions such as tendinitis and neuropathy, particularly in individuals with diabetes, can further contribute to foot pain. Treatment varies depending on the cause but typically includes rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and wearing proper footwear. Stretching exercises and orthotic devices can also help alleviate pain. For persistent or severe foot pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for a comprehensive diagnosis and tailored treatment plan.

The Pain of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. It occurs when this tissue is overstretched or overused, often due to excessive running, standing for long periods, or wearing inadequate footwear. The condition manifests as a sharp, stabbing pain in the heel, particularly noticeable with the first steps in the morning or after long periods of inactivity. Those at higher risk include runners, individuals with high arches or flat feet, people who are overweight, and people who wear shoes with poor arch support. Preventing plantar fasciitis involves wearing supportive footwear, maintaining a healthy weight, and incorporating stretching exercises into daily routines to improve flexibility. Treatment options include rest and stretching exercises, For persistent pain, custom orthotics may be necessary. If you have continued heel pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact James Pak, DPM from California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.
